The day was no different than any other Wednesday. Not really. Except the one extra guest this time. And most were surprised when she pried herself away from his side to bounce around the ship to help them ready for the evening family get together of sort. She normally always did. But they'd accepted the fact that their lovely captain remained perfectly attached to the Nephilim they saved. Most of the crew seemed accepting even. Some even dared to comment she looked more lively than usual. They were right.

Magna had never felt so alive in her entire existence. Getting the ship ready for the evening felt like the singular most important event of her life all of a sudden. Which is why she'd kissed Alec's cheek grinning telling him she'd only be ashore less than half an hour when they stopped to get supplies. And she'd found a dress there from a caravan of wandering gypsies selling silks and clothing that suited her darker complexion as well as the golden jewelry to adorn her arms legs and even her waist. Maybe the adornment int he navel was a little much... but she'd heal fast after taking it out later if he seemed to disapprove.

When she trotted back on board, they set sail to leave shore. The finishing touches could be handled by her crew as they pulled out instruments and readied for the dinner that would end with a night in starlight. Magna, however scurried to Catarina and drug her off. The end result had her picking nervously at the silken falls of silvery blues and teals that could be seen off the coasts of the Caribbean and into the horizon of the sea. It was beautiful. All the way down to the soft ringlets that Catarina enjoyed putting in her hair like a mother doting on her child.

"This is new. I know you like to dress up, but you actually look nervous." Catarina seemed pleased with herself as Magnus managed to blush a delicate crimson. "You really like him don't you?"

Tucking a raven strand behind her ear, she arched a brow at her healer. "It's impossible not to. I'm trying not to let my hopes and desires run away from me."

Catarina only shook her head and pushed at her. "Go get him. It'll likely take him a while to actually come out of your cabin." Magna laughed at that. It was true. Alec had been hiding. But that was before she knew they were accepting. Now they wanted to see him. Curious as to what and who made Magnus Bane so insanely happy.

So when she opened the door to her cabin, holding a package of new clothes for him, she smiled slowly. "Hey... Sorry it's been so crazy today. You know... the crew wants to meet you." The flush in her cheeks only darkened as she worried about how he'd see her in the new clothes, but she didn't wince or shy away. "Please come with me to join them?"

Now that his injuries were mostly healed, he was beginning to feel restless. Alec trained as best he could and helped Catarina with his duties, but overall, he kept away from the rest of the crew, unsure of how the others would react to having a Shadowhunter on the ship. Nephilim didn't have a reputation for kindness and he was surrounded by Downworlders who might not be as empathetic to his plight as their captain had been.

So he stayed out of the way, kept to himself except his time with Catarina, and tried to make sure that he wasn't a bother to the rest of the crew. It really wasn't much different than his life at the Institute except that his family wasn't near. But on the ship he had Magnus....

She made him forget about how much he missed his siblings, giving Alec something that he'd never had before.

Hope.

Back home his parents expected little of him and when measured against Jace and Izzy, he'd never be seen as a great hunter. Few would think of him as a Shadowhunter at all. But Magnus shared his ideals and interests, making him feel like he was valued and important.

Those butterflies that had attacked him the first day he was conscious hadn't left him, fluttering wildly whenever she gave him that smile that seemed to be only for him. It reminded him of how he'd felt around Jace, but this seemed brighter, bringing happiness instead of the guilt that had always accompanied his thoughts about his parabatai.

The nervousness worsened as the preparations for the Wednesday party were underway. He'd said yes to Magnus' invitation, but now he was unsure. The crew might now want an outsider - a Shadowhunter - attending their celebration. Doubt lingered in the back of his mind as he bathed and got ready to meet Magnus, eying his borrowed clothes with distaste.

Normally, he wouldn't care about such things, but he was tired of wearing things that didn't belong to him and, if he was being honest with himself, he wanted to look nice for Magnus. Knowing that he had no other choice, he dressed and tried to control his now unruly hair.

When he heard her enter the cabin, he gave up on it as a lost cause. Turning toward the door, whatever he was going to say was forgotten as he caught sight of her in her new... dress?

Did it count as a dress? It wasn't like anything he'd seen before except in storybooks. She looked like something from a fairy tale, dressed in shades of blue that reminded him of the ocean and sky, gold sparkling against her skin. And... His eyes widened slightly as he realized there was a jewel in her navel.

"It's - I - " Swallowing hard, he tried to speak but the words kept tumbling together. "You look beautiful."

It took him a moment to realize that the faint sound that accompanied her movements were bells. Again, he thought of those stories with the brightly colored illustrations that had caught his eye. Something with gypsies or the Arabian Nights. "Yes, I like it. You look like something out of a story."

Giving himself a mental shake, Alec told himself that he couldn't keep staring at her, especially when she had bought him a gift. "Thank you. I am getting tired of wearing these clothes." Pausing he realized that he sounded almost ungrateful. "I'm glad I have them, but it'd be nice to have something that isn't borrowed."

Taking the package, he sat down on the bed, glancing over at Magnus before opening it quickly when he noticed how nervous she seemed. Inside there was a black shirt and matching trousers. Putting those on the mattress beside him, he lifted up a dark coat that was either black or deep blue, trimmed in gold and a shade of brighter blue that he was sure Magnus would say matched his eyes.

The coat wasn't something he would have chosen for himself - not that he knew anything about fashion - but it was obvious that Magnus had thought of him when she picked it out. That made it special, something he'd be proud to wear. "I love it, Magnus. But I'd still like to go with you next time since you wanted me to go shopping with you."

The slight change in subject kept his eyes from straying to the brightly colored skirt... or the jewel that decorated her navel. He flushed slightly as he realized he was staring, forcing his gaze up to meet her eyes. "No, you're not. I read constantly while growing up." His studies were one of the few things he could excel at compared to his siblings. Jace was the favored student, but Alec had devoured most of the books in the library.

"I'm not that attached to my clothes." Not in a way that most people would understand. Alec protested loudly when his sister and mother decided he needed his wardrobe updated, but what they usually threw out was what he was most comfortable wearing. They never tossed out the things he hated or the clothes he was supposed to wear while attending his parents' parties. "But that doesn't mean I want to wear other people's."

Running his fingers over the fabric of the coat, he smiled at how much thought she'd put into the gift. Usually when someone else picked his things, they cared only about fashion, not whether or not he might like it. "I do. It's perfect."

Laughing softly, he leaned against her, his free hand catching hers. "You did surprise me. I'll try to be patient until I can go with you." For a moment, he stayed where he was, not wanting to move and ruin the contentment that he felt at having Magnus near. "We can stay like this for a little while unless the crew is waiting."

The dress was something he'd only read about. Alec had seen outlandish outfits in the city, but nothing like what Magnus now wore. It was something out of a fantasy, made more exotic with Magnus' catlike eyes... eyes that reflected a happiness that made butterflies dance in his chest.

Isabelle had always told him he was terrible with women, kindness keeping her from ever mentioning the most obvious reason why. He'd always believed her but if the way Magnus was looking at him was indication, Isabelle was wrong. "I do like it. It really does look beautiful. I haven't seen anything like it before."

Returning that smile, the nervous feeling settled to contentment at having Magnus so close. "I had things that I liked back home. The problem was that no one else liked them." It was more than that. Most of it focusing on the family reputation, but Alec was reluctant to speak of it and make that part of his life intrude on his happiness.

Gently squeezing her hand, he wished that 'never' really could happen but he knew that wasn't possible. "Don't make promises like that, Magnus." Vows were too important to Shadowhunters for one to be taken lightly, even ones what were made as jokes. "I want to be there with you."

As Magnus' arms slipped around his neck, Alec blushed slightly as he held her close. The lines of propriety kept blurring or were becoming forgotten but he couldn't bring himself to act the way society would prefer. Not when he wanted Magnus near. Sighing softly, he rested his cheek against her hair. "No one will come looking for you?"

As Magnus caught his hand, it wasn't the fabric that caught his attention. Being close to her made him forget about everything else... temporarily at least. Smiling down at her, Alec told himself that he should pay attention to what she was saying, not how beautiful she looked. "Magic fabric... it really is like a fairy tale."

He was curious about what it's real form was but that didn't seem important when Magnus seemed so annoyed by how his family treated him. It was something Alec was used to. The parties and matchmaking had been part of growing up. The idea that things might be different rarely occurred to him.

At least not until he'd been rescued and given choices he'd never had before. "No one likes what I choose, Magnus. It's always black and too big." And not proper, according to his parents. "They want me to be a gentleman." So that he could help rebuild the family's reputation without thought of what he might want.

It'd be different if Magnus helped him choose. She wouldn't be planning to barter him off to whatever Shadowhunter family his parents wanted favors from. She'd choose because she liked something and thought he might like it too. "We'll both pick, okay? You know what I'll need on the ship." And she wouldn't be parading him around in hopes of finding him a fiancee.

Smiling at the kiss, he ran his fingers lightly over the material before brushing playing with her hair. "I want that too." Alec knew he shouldn't. His family probably thought he was dead even if Jace would know that wasn't true, but he wanted to stay with her for as long as possible.

Part of him wondered if this is where he was meant to be. Being near Magnus made him finally feel whole and alive, like some vital part of himself had been found. Shivering as her fingers moved over one of the runes on his neck, he lightly kissed the top of her head. "I was hoping we'd have time together before the party."

He was looking forward to getting out of Magnus' quarters, but he wouldn't mind if they were late.

"A flying carpet?" It didn't surprise him that Magnus had thought of trying it, but Alec wouldn't have considered it actually working. He considered how she would have been able to ride on it without falling off, and then decided that magic had to be the answer.

Magic was something he'd rarely seen. Nephilim frowned upon it and warlocks had rarely been allowed inside the Institute. When he did see spells being cast, they were practical things meant to heal or allow Shadowhunters to travel from place to place.

As Alec watched the blue fire cupped in her palm turn into a bird, his eyes brightened with wonder. Reaching out, he caught one of the sparks on his palm as if it were a snowflake, the magic tingling along his skin before disappearing. "It's amazing." For a moment, he imagined a cat eyed little girl with an entire magical zoo surrounding her. "Did you make other creatures or just birds?"

Smiling against her hair, he felt a rush of happiness when she said that he was gentleman no matter how he might dress. "I'll take your suggestions and hope that we can find a compromise. I don't want to embarrass you with my bad taste."

A faint blush crept across his face at that kiss, his expression awed as sparkles danced in the air. As he watched them drift away, it seemed like the sparks had found their way into his chest, causing him to feel like he was floating when she cuddled closer.

Gently squeezing her hand, he wondered if he should truly ask for what he'd like. There was one thing he wanted, something he'd thought of since she'd helped him during his first day of consciousness after his rescue.

If she hadn't offered, he never would have dared to speak, keeping his thoughts to himself, but everything felt perfect and he couldn't help asking for something he'd been thinking of for days. "I'd like a kiss. If I can have one."

Considering the circumstances of her experiment, Alec wondered if she would have tried it if she hadn't been drunk. Probably, if there'd been the right motivation. But the fact that she'd done it while intoxicated made him curious about what she could have done if her mind had been clear.

He was also curious why she'd been drinking and why the memory was something not to be proud of... other than the obvious reasons. But he wouldn't ask, not when it seemed that his questions didn't bring up pleasant memories.

Snuggling closer, he nuzzled her hair, trying to give comfort so that whatever hurt her would loosen its hold on her memories. Touching her hand, Alec smiled down at the cat she held in her palm. "They're still beautiful."

Beautiful but sad now that he could see the sadness that accompanied the story. He wanted to protect her from whatever had hurt her and make her smile again. He'd always been the one to defend others, but this was different than making sure to watch his siblings' backs. This was something deeper.

His thoughts turned to less serious as she reminded him of the peacock. Chuckling softly, he ran his hand lightly along her back. "That peacock has many uses." The words sounded solemn, but a smile tugged at his lips. "I really do want to see Ragnor's reaction to it."

The warlock would probably blame Alec somehow for Magnus' wild fashion sense, but it'd be worth it to see Ragnor have a fit.

After he asked that question, he watched her nervously. They'd kissed before, but that didn't mean that she'd allow him to do it again. Or that she'd want him to. For a moment, he was sure she'd say no and he struggled for an apology only to have her smile.

Returning that smile, he leaned in closer, breath hitching slightly as Magnus gave him permission to kiss her whenever he wished. "I didn't want to take liberties I shouldn't."

Even if he'd wanted to, thinking about it every night since he'd give her his first kiss. As he pressed his lips to hers, he almost wished he had more experience so he'd know what she might like, slowly deepening the kiss as he tried to learn what pleased her.

When the magic began to flicker, he thought that maybe he'd disturbed her concentration, and then the cat turned into a wolf that settled on his hand. Watching it in awe, he expected the fire feel flames against his skin as the wolf disappeared but there was no warmth, only a slight tingle as the magic faded away.

Gently squeezing her hand, he considered the description of his family. It was right in many ways. They were trained to hunt together but it made him uncomfortable when so many Shadowhunters thought that Downworlders were just prey. "Dangerous depending on who is using those skills."

Thoughts that easily could have turned to guilt lightened when he heard her laughter. "Why do I have the feeling you have a lot of outfits that offend his senses." Not that offending Ragnor seemed that difficult.

Not that he really wanted to think of the warlock when Magnus was laughing and smiling at him. His eyes half closed as she touched his face, flushing slightly as he thought of being able to kiss her whenever he wished.

His heart stuttered at the thought, a moan catching in his throat as she let him in, the purr encouraging him as he licked into her mouth, memorizing the taste of her until he finally he reluctantly pulled away to pant softly against her lips. "I - Was it... Did you like it?"

Alec knew that she was right, but it was something he'd thought about once he was old enough to realize that how some nephilim treated Downworlders was wrong. "I don't want to be like them, Magnus. I've read the stories about what my ancestors did." Resting his cheek against her hair, he sighed softly, grateful that Magnus realized his motives were different. "I want to use my skills to help."

Returning her grin, he was both afraid of and curious about her wardrobe. But no matter how much he might want to see the kinds of outfits she had to make Ragnor twitch, he was glad that she had thought him important enough to dress up for. Brushing his hand along the skirt, his grin softened to a look of adoration. "Thank you for this."

Although he wasn't sure what he was thanking her for. She'd done so much for him. She had rescued him and offered him a chance at experiencing things that never would have been possible to him at the Institute. That was more than enough to deserve his gratitude, but she gave him more than that, offering him friendship and affection that he'd never had before.

Affection that he returned with an intensity that Alec hadn't realized was possible until he'd met Magnus. Those feelings became more obvious as he tried to slow his racing heart, unconsciously licking his lips as he looked into her eyes. "I loved it too."

Magnus' words were ones that Alec had told himself over and over. He didn't want to be like his ancestors, murdering Downworlders and consorting with demons, but it was a lingering fear. Not all of his family had been that way, but that didn't stop him from wondering if the past could repeat itself.

"I hope it's that easy, Magnus. I don't want to be that way." Although he doubted that he ever could. He'd never wanted to hurt others and now that he'd met Magnus... He couldn't imagine ever harming her or the people she cared for. And if she truly did want to do the right thing with him, then there would be no temptation to ever give in to his ancestors' vices. "I'd like that. I want..."

To be with you...

It was something he'd thought of often once Alec was sure Ragnor wasn't going to feed him to the sharks. He missed his family, but he had the feeling he'd miss Magnus more. She was some vital part of his heart that he'd never realized was missing.

It was probably to think that way. They'd just met. He'd been in love with Jace for years, but now that was a hazy memory and all he could think of was Magnus.

Smiling at that purr, his hand stilled when her breathing changed, afraid that he'd gone too far despite how close they'd become in the past few days. Alec was about to apologize when he saw the emotion in her eyes, realizing that what he felt was shared.

His heart stuttered as she licked her lips, remembering what Magnus had said about being allowed to kiss her whenever he wished. Swallowing hard, he forced himself not to run his hand along her thigh or to lean in for a kiss that he suddenly desperately needed. "I've thought that dozens of times. I've never felt anything like this before."

No matter how much he might want to finish that sentence, Alec knew that he couldn't. Not yet. Not until he had talked to Isabelle and Jace so they knew he was alive and he knew for certain that Magnus wanted him to stay.

But if she did...

He'd give it all up. The Clave wouldn't want him if they ever knew about his secret. His parents would disown him even if he'd never acted on his feelings for Jace. He was too much of a disappointment to them for them to forgive his feelings for his parabatai or for the love he felt for the warlock who had saved him.

Alec had assumed that Jace was the one he loved, never thinking he'd give his heart to another. Yet after a few days, he was willing to give Magnus everything. With that love were feelings he'd never had for any of the women who had thrown themselves at him or even for the teenager he'd thought he'd fallen for completely.

He wanted to kiss her and touch her... Something that Magnus seemed to want as well. Looking into her eyes, he forgot how to breathe as her lips brushed against his lips.

No matter how much he tried, he couldn't stop himself from giving her what she wanted. His hand slid to her hip, pulling her close as his lips parted for her. Groaning lowly into the kiss, he tangled his other hand gently in her hair. Elation caught in his chest as he returned the kiss with all the love and longing he felt for her.

Their first kisses had been shy and sweet with Alec half expecting Magnus to push away or think he was taking advantage. This was different, setting his heart racing as soon as Magnus licked into his mouth. He returned the kiss clumsily, but enthusiastically, learning from what he liked assuming that she would like the same.

Making a quiet sound of protest when she broke the kiss, Alec almost leaned in for another only to almost trip over his own feet as she moved him to the bed. His eyes widened as he ended up sitting on the mattress, blue eyes turning dark as Magnus settled on his lap.

Swallowing hard, he tried not to react to having her close, but that was impossible. Especially when she found a spot on his neck that seemed to make him forget about everything except how much he loved and wanted her. Shivering as she nipped at his skin, Alec slid his hands along her skirt, fingers slipping beneath the silken fabric.

It was completely improper to touch her and to let her keep teasing his neck, but he couldn't protest. Panting softly, he tipped his head to give Magnus better access, tracing patterns against her skin. "No... don't stop."
